Discover Asuka Japanese Steak House & Sushi

Walking into Asuka Japanese Steak House & Sushi at 360 E Brannon Rd, Nicholasville, KY 40356, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood hangout that just happens to serve restaurant-quality hibachi and sushi. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, mostly after long workdays, and the consistency is what keeps pulling me back. The chefs work fast, the servers remember faces, and even on busy Friday nights the food lands on the table hot and exactly how you ordered it.

One night I brought my younger cousins who had never seen a hibachi grill in action. The chef cracked jokes, flipped shrimp into the air, and explained how he layers soy sauce, garlic butter, and sesame oil to build flavor before the rice ever hits the plate. That little behind-the-scenes process mirrors what culinary schools teach about heat control and fat emulsification, something the American Culinary Federation often emphasizes in their training resources. You can taste that attention to method in the chicken teriyaki and filet mignon combos, which stay tender instead of drying out.

The menu balances comfort food with adventurous bites. If you’re new, the hibachi steak and shrimp plate is a safe bet. Regulars tend to branch out to sushi rolls like the spicy tuna or the rainbow roll, both made with rice that’s seasoned properly, not cloying. According to data from the National Restaurant Association, sushi remains one of the top three fastest-growing menu categories in the U.S., and places like this prove why: fresh fish, simple ingredients, no fuss. I once asked the sushi chef how they keep the fish so clean-tasting, and he explained their daily delivery schedule and strict temperature logs, which is in line with FDA food safety recommendations.

What really stands out, though, are the reviews from locals. A friend who works in hospitality told me she tracks Google and Yelp comments as part of her job, and she noticed that this spot consistently gets praise for speed and friendliness. One recent post literally said the service was best in town, and that’s not far off from my experience. Even when I ordered takeout during a lunch rush, the cashier double-checked my bag, labeled each container, and reminded me which sauce went with what. That kind of detail is something restaurant management experts like Danny Meyer often point to as the difference between good and great dining rooms.

There are a few limitations worth mentioning. During peak hours, parking around the Brannon Road shopping area can get tight, and wait times stretch longer than expected. Also, while the menu is broad, vegetarians have fewer options beyond the vegetable hibachi and avocado rolls. Still, the kitchen has always been willing to customize, swapping proteins or dialing down sodium when I asked, which aligns with what the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends about accommodating dietary needs.

For families, the diner-style vibe makes it approachable. Kids stare wide-eyed at flaming onion volcanoes while adults relax with miso soup or a simple salad with ginger dressing. One of my coworkers even hosted a small birthday dinner here, and the staff surprised her with a sparkler dessert after she casually mentioned the occasion. Moments like that don’t show up on the menu, but they live in people’s memories.

Over time I’ve tried most locations around central Kentucky that claim to do Japanese steakhouse right, and many fall short on either flavor or atmosphere. This one manages to land in that sweet spot where casual meets polished. Whether you’re browsing online reviews before dinner or just cruising Brannon Road looking for something better than fast food, it’s the kind of place that turns a random weeknight into something that feels a little like a celebration, without ever trying too hard to be anything other than itself.

  • We had an enjoyable lunch on Asuka's patio yesterday instead of at the hibachi grill and ordered off the dine-in menu. We tried two Bento boxes. One with chicken and the other with salmon. The chicken tasted as good as having it right off the grill and the salmon was exceptional. We had Japanese dumplings and spring rolls as appetizers and California and Spicy Crab sushi rolls as well. Miso soup, salad with ginger dressing and steamed rice are included. The value is outstanding. We will be back with friends soon.

  • We had Jenny as our server and she was phenomenal. She had a great personality and was very concerned about our table and keeping our drinks, etc. We will definitely come back not just cause the food is great but because of the great service.
